Electricity Production Increased in 2021, with Coal-Fired Power Plants as the Largest Contributor

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded an increase in electricity production in 2021, reaching 289,000 gigawatt hours (GWh).

In 2020, electricity production was 271,000 GWh, down from 282,000 GWh in 2019.

Of this total, Coal-fired Power Plants (PLTU) provided the most electricity, generating 191,000 GWh in 2021.

Although the most productive power plant type, PLTU experienced a production decrease in 2020, reaching only 178,000 GWh compared to 185,000 GWh in 2019.

Second, Gas and Steam Power Plants (PLTGU) generated 38,000 GWh in 2021, nearly 36,000 GWh in 2020, and 40,000 GWh in 2019.

Third, Hydroelectric Power Plants (PLTA) produced 18,000 GWh in 2021. Unlike several other power plants that saw declines during the COVID-19 pandemic, PLTA production increased to 20,000 GWh in 2020 from 19,000 GWh in 2019.

Fourth, Geothermal Power Plants (PLTP) generated almost 16,000 GWh in 2021; 12,800 GWh in 2020; and 12,700 GWh in 2019.

Other power plants had maximum production reaching 10,000 GWh, with the rest below that figure, as shown in the chart above.

The data used was processed by BPS from various publications issued by BPS itself, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (Kemen ESDM), Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Pertamina Gas Negara (PGN), the Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas), and Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI).
