The number of customers of Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), the Indonesian state-owned electricity company, has grown rapidly over the past decade.
According to the PLN 2022 Statistics report, at the end of last year they had approximately 85.6 million customers, a 3.75% increase compared to 2021 (year-on-year/yoy).
Compared to ten years earlier, the number of PLN customers in 2022 had grown by approximately 72%, as detailed in the graph.
This customer growth is accompanied by an increase in electricity sales and company profits.
Throughout 2022, PLN's electricity sales increased by 6.3% (yoy) to 273.8 terawatt-hours (TWh).
PLN's profit for the 2022 fiscal year also rose by 9.4% (yoy) to Rp14.4 trillion, their highest profit ever.
According to PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo, this achievement was attained thanks to restructuring across all of PLN's business processes, including changing the organizational culture from bureaucratic to business-like.
"We will continue the transformation to improve customer service," said Darmawan in a press release on PLN's official website on Wednesday (7/6/2023).
Darmawan stated that PLN will continue to strive to expand electricity access to the most remote, outermost, and underdeveloped areas (3T), and to carry out the mandate of the energy transition to reduce global warming.
"With the challenges of the energy transition, we have mapped it out, we have prepared the strategy, turning it into an opportunity, to ensure that Indonesia is not just a market for New and Renewable Energy (NRE) products from abroad, but also becomes part of the producers that will bring added value to Indonesia," he said.
