At the beginning of President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi) administration, the construction of a 35,000 Megawatt (MW) power plant was initiated. This mega-power project aimed to achieve 100 percent electrification by 2024. However, data from the Cabinet Secretariat Ministry (KSP) shows that within three years of Jokowi's leadership, only 758 MW, or approximately 2 percent, has become operational, out of a total power capacity of 35,826 MW. Despite this, the government remains committed to completing the mega-project and will enter the construction phase by 2019 at the latest.
The majority of this mega-power project is in the construction phase, reaching 14,768 MW or approximately 41 percent of the target. Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) have been completed for 8,750 MW, or about 24.2 percent. Procurement is underway for 4,590 MW (12.81 percent), and 6,970 MW (19.46 percent) are still in the planning phase.
Electricity availability is a crucial component for boosting national productivity. Therefore, the government is striving to improve electricity services for the community, reaching even the most remote areas of the archipelago. From 12,000 villages without electricity access in 2014, this number has now decreased to 2,500.
