The increasing public demand for electricity, in line with population growth, has led to a continuous increase in electricity customers. Based on data from the Indonesian state-owned electricity company (Perusahaan Listrik Negara or PLN), the number of electricity customers reached 66.63 million by the end of August 2017. This figure represents a 3.65 percent increase compared to the end of 2016, which stood at 64.28 million customers. During the 2012-2016 period, the number of electricity consumers grew at an average rate of 7.45 percent per year.
Meanwhile, PLN's electricity sales from January to August 2017 reached 146.37 Giga Watt Hours (GWh), a 2.8 percent increase compared to the same period the previous year. In the 2011-2016 period, the state-owned enterprise's electricity sales grew at an average rate of 6.49 percent per year.
To improve electricity services for the public and achieve the target of 100 percent electrification by 2024, the government is planning the construction of a 35,000 MW power plant. In addition, the government will also target the procurement of 108,000 MVA substations with 46,760 kilometers of transmission lines. The funding requirement for electricity infrastructure development during the 2015-2019 period reached Rp 1,250 trillion.
