The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) reported that 140 villages in Indonesia remained un-electrified in 2023. These unelectrified villages are estimated to encompass 185,662 households, all located on the island of Papua.

The highest number of unelectrified villages is in Papua Pegunungan Province, with 56 villages. Papua Tengah Province has 47 unelectrified villages, Papua Selatan Province 16, Papua Barat Daya Province 12, and Papua Province 9.

"We must re-identify areas that are inaccessible, remote, and still un-electrified. This will be our program in 2024," said ESDM Minister Arifin Tasrif in a press conference on Tuesday (15/1/2024).

In addition to reaching areas without electricity, Arifin stated that this year the ESDM Ministry is optimizing domestic electricity transmission.

"So that we can make the operations of power plants more efficient, resulting in cheaper electricity prices and reducing subsidies," said Arifin.

Indonesia's realized electricity consumption in 2023 is estimated to have reached 1,285 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per capita. This figure only meets 99.78% of the 2023 target.

For 2024, the ESDM Ministry targets an increase in electricity consumption to 1,408 kWh per capita.
