The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) reports that Indonesia's potential for new and renewable energy (NRE) reaches 3,687 gigawatts (GW). However, as of February 2025, only 0.4% or 15.15 GW has been utilized.

The following is a complete list of NRE potential and installed capacity as of February 2025:

1. Solar: Potential 1,294 GW, installed 0.98 GW

2. Wind: Potential 155 GW, installed 0.15 GW

3. Hydro: Potential 95 GW, installed 7.12 GW

4. Ocean: Potential 63 GW, not yet utilized

5. Bioenergy: Potential 57 GW, installed 1.67 GW

6. Geothermal: Potential 24 GW, installed 2.69 GW

7. Coal gasification: Potential 0 GW, installed 0.45 GW

The projected utilization of NRE in the electricity sector is 0.4%.

The ESDM Ministry also mapped the NRE potential across Indonesia. Sumatra is projected to have the largest potential, with a capacity of 1,240.64 GW.

Java has an NRE potential of 696.58 GW, Maluku and Papua 518.46 GW, Kalimantan 517.53 GW, Bali and Nusa Tenggara 457.17 GW, and Sulawesi 257.36 GW.
