Household Telecommunications Access in Papua is the Most Backward

Papua's community telecommunications access lags behind other provinces. One indicator is the low percentage of households in the province with telecommunications expenditure.

Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), only 53.54% of households in Papua had telecommunications expenditure in 2021. This means that 46.46% of households in Papua did not have telecommunications expenditure.

More specifically, 94.58% of urban households in Papua had telecommunications expenditure in 2021, while only 37.87% of rural households did. This reflects the significant disparity in household telecommunications access between rural and urban areas of Papua.

The next lowest percentage of households with telecommunications expenditure was in East Nusa Tenggara, at 87.85% in 2021. This was followed by East Java at 88.5%, Central Java at 88.88%, and West Java at 89.82%.

Next were West Nusa Tenggara with 89.88%, North Maluku with 90.34%, Central Sulawesi with 90.46%, and West Kalimantan and West Sulawesi at 91.02% and 91.31% respectively.

Nationally, 91.06% of households had telecommunications expenditure in 2021. Nine provinces had a percentage of households with telecommunications expenditure below the national average. The remaining 25 provinces were above the national average.
