Indonesia's power plant capacity additions have reached 1,717 Megawatts (MW) per year. This figure is significantly low compared to the projected demand of 7,000 MW per year. State Electricity Company (PLN) statistics show that the highest capacity addition was achieved in 2013, reaching 2,138 MW.
PLN records indicate that 28 power plants with a total installed capacity of 2,018 MW were completed in 2015. Furthermore, by April 2016, 5 power plants with an installed capacity of 397 MW had been completed.
As published by PLN, the total installed national electricity generation capacity currently reaches 50,000 MW. These power plants were built by both PLN and private companies. Considering a projected economic growth of 6-7 percent per year, an additional 35,000 MW of electricity capacity is needed over the next five years, or 7,000 MW per year.
The 35,000 MW electricity program is currently a major ambition of President Joko Widodo. This plan is included in the 2015-2019 National Medium-Term Development Plan. This program is estimated to require investments of up to Rp1,100 trillion.
