The average number of passengers on the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) showed an upward trend from February to September 2022, as seen in the graph.
Based on MRT Jakarta data, the average daily ridership in February 2022 reached only 19,470 passengers per day. By September 2022, this had surged to 65,260 passengers per day. However, this figure is still below the pre-COVID-19 pandemic average of 88,000 passengers per day in February 2020.
The easing of social restrictions as the COVID-19 pandemic subsided fueled the increase in the use of this public transportation mode in Jakarta. The return to office work ("work from office") also contributed to the rise in MRT passengers.
At the beginning of the pandemic, average ridership plummeted to its lowest level, reaching only 1,405 passengers in May 2020 due to passenger capacity restrictions aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus.
The government's policy to increase subsidized fuel prices (BBM) starting September 3rd also impacted MRT ridership. The average daily ridership before the fuel price increase was 61,010 passengers, increasing by 3.8% to 63,340 passengers after the increase.
Specifically, the average daily ridership on weekdays increased by 8.5% to 72,940 passengers after the subsidized fuel price increase, compared to 67,210 passengers previously. Similarly, the average daily weekend ridership also increased by 4% to 44,120 passengers from 42,410 passengers previously.
