The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded 2.4 million domestic air passengers in May 2021. This figure is down 12.68% from the previous month's 2.8 million passengers.
However, the number of domestic air passengers in May 2021 was still higher than in the same period the previous year. In May 2020, the number of domestic air passengers in Indonesia was only 90,000.
In detail, the most domestic air passengers in May 2021 originated from Soekarno-Hatta Airport, Tangerang, namely 598,600 people. At Juanda Airport, Surabaya, the number of domestic air passengers was recorded at 210,700.
Domestic air passengers originating from Hasanuddin Airport, Makassar reached 143,000. Then, air passengers at Ngurah Rai Airport, Denpasar and Kualanamu, Medan were 120,900 and 104,600 respectively. The remaining 1.3 million domestic air passengers were spread across various other airports.
Meanwhile, the number of domestic air passengers from January to May 2021 reached 12.1 million. This figure decreased by 31.12% compared to the same period last year, which was 17.58 million.
The decrease in the number of domestic air passengers is still likely to continue in the future. Especially since the government implemented Emergency Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM Darurat) from July 3 to 20, 2021, in six provinces on Java and Bali.
