Air pollution affecting air quality in Jakarta and surrounding areas has recently come under public scrutiny. Vehicles are cited as one of several causes of high air pollution in the Jabodetabek region.
This claim was made by the Minister of Environment and Forestry (LHK), Siti Nurbaya, who stated that current air pollution in Jabodetabek is caused by motor vehicles.
"The main cause of air quality pollution is vehicles," said Siti Nurbaya, as quoted by *Detik.com*, Monday (14/8/2023).
President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) also explained several factors contributing to the increase in air pollution in Jabodetabek, one of which is the transportation sector.
"There are several factors causing this situation, including the three-month-long dry season which has led to a high concentration of pollutants, emissions from transportation, and industrial activities in Jabodetabek, especially those using coal in the manufacturing sector," said Jokowi.
So, how many vehicles are there in the Jabodetabek region today?
Based on data from the Electronic Registration Identification (ERI) of the Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps, there are 22.97 million vehicles in several areas of Jabodetabek or the jurisdiction of the Metro Jaya Police as of August 14, 2023.
The jurisdiction of the Metro Jaya Police comprises 16 police districts: East Jakarta, West Jakarta, South Jakarta, Bekasi Regency, Bekasi City, North Jakarta, Depok City, Tangerang City, Central Jakarta, South Tangerang City, Ciledug, Tangerang Regency, Serpong, Tangerang Regency (Kelapa Dua), Cinere, and Bogor Regency.
The majority of these vehicles are motorcycles, reaching 18.28 million units. This is equivalent to 79.85% of the total vehicles registered in the jurisdiction of the Metro Jaya Police.
Furthermore, there are 3.8 million private cars in the jurisdiction of the Metro Jaya Police. Then, there are 795,100 minibuses, 60,100 special vehicles, and 37,560 buses.
Jokowi issued several directives to reduce air pollution in Jabodetabek. These include encouraging work from home (WFH) options and conducting weather modification to induce rain.
Other efforts include accelerating the implementation of emission restrictions and urging the public to reduce the use of fossil fuel-based vehicles and switch to mass transportation.
"I think this month the LRT will soon be operational, the MRT is already operating, the high-speed train will also be operating next month, and the acceleration of the electrification of public vehicles with government assistance," said Jokowi.
In addition, Jokowi asked industrial players and power plants, especially around Jabodetabek, to conduct supervision and strengthen mitigation and adaptation actions for the ongoing climate change.
"Finally, educating the public extensively (to reduce air pollution)," he said.
