According to a report by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), there were 1,393 aircraft accidents worldwide between 2005 and June 2023.
The majority of aircraft accidents occurred during landing, with 738 accidents during that period.
Second most frequent were accidents during take-off, with 118 accidents.
Citing Flightsafety.org, take-off and landing are the most critical phases of a flight. This phase is referred to as the "critical eleven," or the eleven most critical minutes of a flight.
The "critical eleven" occurs three minutes after take-off and eight minutes before landing. During this crucial time, no one should communicate with the flight crew in the cockpit. All onboard activities are also halted, and all passengers are requested to remain seated.
Furthermore, many aircraft accidents occurred during the approach phase (115 accidents). This is the final phase of the flight, as the aircraft nears the runway.
Here is a breakdown of the number of aircraft accidents worldwide by flight phase from 2005 to June 2023:
* Landing: 738 accidents
* Take-off: 118 accidents
* Approach: 115 accidents
* Initial climb: 85 accidents
* Cruise: 65 accidents
* Taxi in: 45 accidents
* Others: 227 accidents
