Sales of electric vehicles (EVs) are increasingly popular worldwide. According to a Statista report, almost 3 million electric vehicles were sold globally from January to May 2022.
This figure represents an increase of more than 80% year-on-year (YoY). In January-May 2021, global electric vehicle sales totaled only 1.7 million units.
Based on the manufacturer, Tesla maintains its lead as the world's largest electric vehicle "factory." Elon Musk's company commanded 13.6% of the global electric vehicle market share from January to May 2022.
The joint venture SAIC-GM-Wuling ranks second as the world's second-largest electric vehicle producer. This Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer achieved a 9.3% global market share.
BYD Automobile and Volkswagen follow, with respective electric vehicle market shares of 8.5%. Hyundai-KIA and Geely-Volvo follow with respective electric vehicle market shares of 6.2%.
Meanwhile, 47.7% of the electric vehicle market share belongs to other manufacturers.
According to Statista, demand for electric vehicles is generally stronger in the later months of the year. "Analysts predict that the market should surpass the milestone of 7 million vehicles shipped this year," Statista reported last Wednesday (July 6).
