Based on data from the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF), motorcycle sales in Southeast Asia reached 9,638,703 units from January to September 2023.
This figure is up 9.2% compared to January-September last year (year-on-year/yoy), which totaled 8,825,484 units.
The AAF data only includes two-wheeled vehicle sales in six Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
From January to September 2023, Indonesia remained the largest contributor to motorcycle sales in Southeast Asia, with sales reaching 4,721,683 units or 48.98% of total regional sales.
Motorcycle sales in Indonesia during this period also increased by 30.7% (yoy).
Vietnam ranked second with motorcycle sales of 1,867,022 units, down 14% (yoy). Its contribution was 19.37% of total sales in Southeast Asia.
The next largest motorcycle sales were recorded in Thailand and the Philippines, at 1,446,338 units and 1,165,075 units respectively. Malaysia was in fifth place with motorcycle sales of 429,594 units.
Meanwhile, Singapore ranked sixth and last in the region according to AAF data, with 8,991 units. This contributed only 0.09% to total motorcycle sales in Southeast Asia.
The AAF reported that motorcycle production in Southeast Asia reached 10,136,499 million units from January to September 2023. This figure is up 10.4% from the previous year (yoy).
Indonesia also remained the largest contributor to motorcycle production in the region, with 5,150,413 million units (50.81%). This was followed by Vietnam with 1,962,197 units, Thailand with 1,638,051 units, the Philippines with 942,255 units, and Malaysia with 443,583 units.
