According to a study by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, hybrid cars emit an average of 80 grams of CO2/kilometer. This is significantly lower than gasoline-powered cars, which emit 240 grams of CO2/kilometer.
However, hybrid car emissions are still higher than those of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), which average only 5 grams of CO2/kilometer.
Hybrid cars have higher emissions because they have two types of drive systems: an electric motor and a conventional engine.
The electric motor in hybrid cars gets its energy from deceleration—kinetic energy generated when the car brakes or reduces speed. The conventional engine uses gasoline, which is the source of emissions.
The electric motor operates when the car is moving slowly. When the electricity supply is depleted, the hybrid car's drive system automatically switches to the gasoline engine.
