In the first three months of 2023, Electric Multiple Units (EMUs) or Commuter Line trains in the Jabodetabek (Greater Jakarta) and Yogyakarta-Solo areas transported over 68 million passengers.
Data from PT Kereta Api Indonesia Commuter (KAI Commuter) reveals a difference in usage patterns between the two regions.
In Jabodetabek, the average daily ridership on weekends reached 608,000 passengers, while weekdays saw a higher average of 806,000 passengers.
From January to March 2023, Jabodetabek KRLs served 67 million passengers. KAI reported the highest ridership on March 21, 2023, with 973,000 passengers, and the lowest on March 26, 2023, with only 383,000 passengers.
"In Jabodetabek, we operate over 1,100 trips on weekdays to accommodate the higher commuter line usage during weekdays," wrote KAI Commuter on its official Instagram account, @commuterline, last Thursday (April 6, 2023).

In contrast, the Yogyakarta-Solo line saw higher ridership on weekends. The average daily ridership on weekends reached 18,000 passengers, compared to 11,000 on weekdays.
"This proves that many people spend their holidays traveling using the commuter line," said KAI.
Cumulatively, KRL ridership in Yogyakarta-Solo from January to March 2023 reached 1.2 million passengers.
