According to KAI Commuter, 29 electric multiple unit (EMU) train sets are aging and will reach the end of their operational lifespan in 2023-2024.
KAI Commuter plans to procure new EMU trains by ordering new sets from PT INKA. However, PT INKA will only be able to complete production in 2025-2026.
As an alternative, KAI Commuter has proposed importing used EMUs from Japan to meet the immediate need for train replacement and to serve the ever-increasing number of passengers.
"This year, the number of KRL passengers is expected to exceed one million per day," said VP Corporate Secretary of KAI Commuter, Anne Purba, as reported by *Katadata*, Tuesday (28/2/2023).
According to data from the Directorate General of Railways, Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub), there have been no projects for the procurement of electric multiple units (EMUs), diesel multiple units (DMUs), or diesel-electric multiple units (DEMUs) in the last five years.
The last procurement of EMUs/DMUs/DEMUs was in 2017, with 4 units. No procurement took place at all during the period 2018-2022, as shown in the graph above.
Regarding this situation, Kemenhub has approved the plan to import used EMUs, with the condition that the EMUs must be revitalized using domestic components.
"The procurement of these facilities must be carried out immediately to replace several train sets that will be retired in 2023-2024, considering their age," said Kemenhub spokesperson Adita Irawati, as reported by *Katadata*, Wednesday (1/3/2023).
