The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reported that the number of train passengers in Indonesia reached 32.91 million in November 2023.
The number of train passengers decreased by 2.02% month-on-month (mom), but surged by 22.23% year-on-year (yoy) compared to November 2022.
By region, the number of train passengers in the Jabodetabek area still dominated, reaching 26.17 million in November 2023. Meanwhile, the number of train passengers in the non-Jabodetabek area of Java reached 6.25 million.
In total, the number of train passengers on the island of Java reached 33.1 million in November 2023.
Meanwhile, the number of train passengers on the island of Sumatra was only 486,000 during the same period.
The number of domestic train passengers has generally continued to increase since mid-2022, compared to the beginning of the pandemic when the numbers plummeted sharply, as shown in the graph above.
The number of train passengers in Indonesia reached its post-pandemic high in October 2023, at 33.58 million. This figure even exceeded the pre-pandemic record of 32.28 million in February 2020.
Cumulatively, the number of train passengers from January to November 2023 reached 336.47 million, up 36.07% compared to the January-November 2022 period, which totaled 247.29 million.
