The government has undertaken several initiatives to develop the electric vehicle ecosystem, including issuing Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 55 of 2019 on the Acceleration of Battery-Based Electric Motor Vehicles (KBL-BB) for Road Transportation.
"Various derivative regulations from this Perpres have also been issued to accelerate the development of the KBL-BB ecosystem in Indonesia," said Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto in his press release on Monday (21/11/2022).
"Hopefully, this step in producing vehicles with electrification technology can benefit economic resilience and support the commitment to net zero emission," he continued.
Although the Indonesian electric vehicle market is currently dominated by Wuling, its position could be overtaken by other companies in the coming years.
According to the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Toyota Group has prepared an investment of US$2 billion, or approximately Rp28.3 trillion, for the development of electric vehicles in Indonesia over the next five years. The Japanese company has also prepared training facilities for electrification workforce.
"Hopefully, this will also encourage the creation of a sustainable EV ecosystem. I also hope that other types of cars, both SUVs and MPVs, can use EV technology," said Coordinating Minister Airlangga.
