PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), or KAI, recorded a surge in train passengers during the long Waisak Day holiday period from May 22-26, 2024.
Based on KAI data from Sunday afternoon (May 26, 2024), the volume of train passengers during that period reached 797,783 people, or an average of 159,557 passengers per day.
"There was a 23% increase in passengers compared to the previous week, from Wednesday (May 15, 2024) to Sunday (May 19, 2024), where KAI served 650,818 passengers, or an average of 130,164 passengers per day," said KAI VP of Public Relations Joni Martinus in a press release on Sunday (May 26, 2024).
Joni explained that the peak of outbound travel for the Waisak long weekend this year occurred on Thursday (May 23, 2024) with 171,254 passengers. The peak of the return flow occurred on Sunday (May 26, 2024) with a total of 164,304 passengers.
Popular routes throughout this period included Jakarta-Surabaya round trip, Jakarta-Solo round trip, Jakarta-Malang round trip, Yogyakarta-Banyuwangi round trip, Blitar-Bandung round trip, and other routes.
To accommodate the surge in passengers during the long holiday, KAI prepared 20 additional trains, resulting in a total of approximately 1,500 train trips.
