The number of traffic accidents throughout Indonesia in 2017 was lower than the previous year. Data from the Indonesian National Police recorded a decrease in the number of motor vehicle accidents to only 98,419 incidents, compared to the previous year, as shown in the graph below.
Throughout last year, 25,859 people died as a result of traffic accidents, and 16,159 suffered serious injuries. The main cause of motor vehicle accidents was human error, such as drowsiness while driving or driver incompetence, accounting for 35%. Meanwhile, vehicle-related factors, such as brake failure, accounted for 31%.
Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics, the material losses caused by traffic accidents throughout 2016 reached Rp 226 billion, lower than the previous year's Rp 272 billion.
