Ford Motor Company, a renowned American automaker, is investing in a nickel refining project in Southeast Sulawesi (Sulteng), Indonesia. As reported by *Katadata*, this smelter will produce battery materials for electric vehicles.
Ford, in partnership with PT Vale Indonesia and Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, has committed US$4.5 billion (Rp 67.4 trillion) to the project, signed on Thursday, March 30, 2023. The project will be located in Pomalaa District, Kolaka Regency.
What about Ford's future electric vehicle sales and production targets?
*CNN* reports that Ford sold 96,000 electric vehicles in 2022. Ford experienced losses of approximately US$3 billion over the past two years.
However, Ford expects its electric vehicles to become profitable quickly. *Reuters* reports the company has set an ambitious production target of 600,000 units in 2023.
This includes 270,000 Mustang Mach-E units, 160,000 F-150 Lightning pick-up trucks, 150,000 Transit vans, and 30,000 new SUVs.
By the end of 2026, Ford aims to produce over 2 million units annually. To achieve this, they are securing approximately 70% of battery cell production capacity.
"Ford says it is also securing battery cell raw materials directly, agreeing to source most of the nickel it needs through 2026 and beyond through agreements with Vale SA's units in Canada and Indonesia, China's Huayou Cobalt and BHP," wrote *Reuters* in July 2022.
