Increased societal mobility is evident in the rising number of passengers using various modes of transportation, including trains. The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that the number of train passengers reached 15.32 million in November 2021, a 15.6% increase compared to the previous month's 13.25 million passengers.
The majority of these passengers were commuters in the Jabodetabek area, totaling 12.8 million or 83.52% of the total train passengers.
The increase in train passengers occurred across all regions. In the Jabodetabek area, train passengers increased by 12.73%, in the Java-Non Jabodetabek region by 32.2%, and in the Sumatra region by 40.54%.
The number of train passengers in November 2021 was the highest since November 2020. The number of train passengers had plummeted to only 5.75 million in July 2021 during the implementation of Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM).
Subsequently, the number of train passengers showed an increase after the easing of PPKM in August, reaching 6.52 million passengers. Thereafter, train passengers continued to increase, reaching a record high in November 2021.
Cumulatively, the number of train passengers from January to November 2021 reached 132.3 million. This figure is down 23.33% compared to the same period in 2020.
