According to PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), there are still railway level crossings with illegal status in Indonesia as of late 2025.
KAI data as of December 2025 shows that there are 3,777 level crossings nationwide. However, only 2,763 of these are officially recognized.
Meanwhile, 1,014 crossings are classified as illegal. This figure is equivalent to 27% of the total level crossings in Indonesia.
Furthermore, out of the 2,763 official crossings, 1,862 are guarded while 901 remain unguarded.
In this regard, KAI stated that they continue to coordinate with central and local governments, as well as the community, to improve crossing safety on a sustainable basis.
As previously reported, an accident occurred between a KRL Commuter Line and the Argo Bromo Anggrek train at East Bekasi Station, West Java, on Monday (27/4/2026) night.
The incident is thought to have started with an accident at the Ampera Road level crossing, near East Bekasi Station.
Responding to this incident, the Minister of State Secretary, Prasetyo Hadi, stated that President Prabowo Subianto plans to reorganize approximately 1,800 railway crossings in various regions.
The management includes providing guards at crossings to the construction of flyovers.
"The President requested that immediate steps and solutions be taken to ensure that undesirable events do not happen in the future," said Prasetyo, as quoted by Katadata.co.id.
