Data from Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), processed by the Katadata data journalism team, reveals that many people in the Jabodetabek area (Greater Jakarta) spent significant amounts on daily round-trip transportation costs in 2023. These individuals who make daily commutes are referred to as commuters.
BPS classified daily commuter fares into five categories: Rp5,000 per day; Rp5,000–Rp9,999; Rp10,000–Rp14,999; Rp15,000–Rp24,999; and over Rp25,000.
In the highest fare category (over Rp25,000 per day), residents of South Tangerang City (Tangsel) reported the highest expenditure, accounting for 43.99% of respondents in that area.
Depok City followed with 37.86%, then Bogor City (34.74%), Bekasi City (33.97%), and Bogor Regency (32.31%).
Conversely, Central Jakarta had the lowest proportion of residents spending over Rp25,000 in this category, at only 10.72%.

This survey, detailed in the report Jabodetabek Commuter Statistics, covered a sample of 19,050 households across 1,905 census blocks spread across South Jakarta, East Jakarta, Central Jakarta, West Jakarta, North Jakarta, Bogor Regency, Bekasi Regency, Bogor City, Bekasi City, Depok City, Tangerang Regency, Tangerang City, and South Tangerang City.
The survey counted 4.41 million individuals in the commuter transportation cost survey. The sample was selected using two-stage sampling conducted in October 2023.
