BYD Auto Remains the World's Largest Electric Vehicle Manufacturer in Q1 2025

Counterpoint data shows that BYD Auto remains the global leader in electric vehicle (EV) market share in Q1 2025. This EV category includes only battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

BYD Auto's market share reached 15% in Q1 2025, unchanged from the same period the previous year.

Tesla, in second place, experienced a significant decline in the first quarter of this year compared to the previous year.

Here's a breakdown of the global BEV market share in Q1 2024 and Q1 2025:

According to Counterpoint, global BEV sales increased by 40% year-on-year (YoY). China dominated the market, accounting for 55% of total global BEV sales.

"BYD Auto maintained its position as the top global BEV seller after overtaking Tesla in Q4 2024," said Counterpoint.

Among the top 3 BEV players, BYD recorded a 39% YoY increase in sales in Q1 2025. The Seagull, Yuan UP, and Song models emerged as its best-selling BEVs during the quarter.

"BYD also exported over 200,000 vehicles, including plug-in hybrids, with a third of these exports going to Europe, followed by Latin America and Southeast Asia," stated Counterpoint.

Meanwhile, Tesla's sales in Q1 2025 decreased by 13% YoY. Geely Holdings' BEV sales surged 105% YoY in Q1 2025.

"The Galaxy and Geometry sub-brands contributed 60% of the company's total BEV sales. The Geely Geome Xingyuan (also known as Star Wish), Panda Mini, and Geely e5 were the brand's best-selling BEV models," Counterpoint revealed.
