According to data from PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), 278,072 foreign nationals (WNA) used long-distance trains in Indonesia during the first half of 2025.
This volume represents a 10.5% increase compared to the first half of the previous year, which saw 251,647 foreign national passengers.
"This growth demonstrates that train services are not only the backbone of domestic transportation but are also increasingly popular with foreign tourists due to their comfort, affordability, and connectivity between tourist areas," said KAI Vice President of Public Relations, Anne Purba, in a press release on Tuesday (July 8, 2025).
In the first half of this year, the most popular train route for foreign nationals was Gambir–Yogyakarta.
Below is a list of the top 10 Indonesian long-distance train routes with the most foreign national passengers in the first half of 2025:
1. Gambir–Yogyakarta: 14,977 passengers
2. Bandung–Gambir: 14,504 passengers
3. Gambir–Bandung: 13,589 passengers
4. Bandung–Yogyakarta: 11,325 passengers
5. Yogyakarta–Malang: 10,438 passengers
6. Yogyakarta–Surabaya Gubeng: 9,562 passengers
7. Yogyakarta–Gambir: 8,174 passengers
8. Surabaya Gubeng–Yogyakarta: 5,785 passengers
9. Gambir–Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng: 4,827 passengers
10. Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng–Gambir: 4,237 passengers
"KAI will continue to strengthen collaboration with tourism players, local governments, and relevant ministries to make train services a part of a world-class national tourism ecosystem," said Anne.
