According to a survey by the Ministry of Transportation, an estimated 146.48 million people are predicted to travel for the 2025 Eid al-Fitr homecoming (mudik), equivalent to 52% of Indonesia's total population.
The majority plan to travel by private car, with an estimated 33.69 million people (23% of total travelers).
Other popular modes of transportation include buses (16.9%), intercity trains (13.5%), and motorcycles (8.7%).
Some travelers also plan to use rented cars, sea vessels, ferries, high-speed trains, online taxis, and other means of transportation, with proportions as shown in the graph.
The survey also found that the peak departure for private car travel is predicted to occur three days before Eid al-Fitr, or March 28, 2025.
"The number is 3.47 million (private car departures), while the highest number of private car returns falls on the fifth day after Eid al-Fitr, at 6.97 million," said Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi in a working meeting with Commission V of the DPR (House of Representatives) on Tuesday (March 11, 2025).
He mentioned that congestion of private cars during the homecoming season is potentially going to occur on all toll roads, both in Java and outside Java.
Similarly, for motorcycle travel, the peak departure is predicted to occur three days before Eid al-Fitr with a total of 1.08 million people. The peak return flow is predicted to occur on the fifth day after Eid al-Fitr with a total of 2.3 million people.
