A Kompas Research and Development (Litbang Kompas) survey shows that 48% of respondents plan to travel home for Eid al-Fitr 2025 by car for intercity travel within the same province.
"This means that nationally, the majority of car trips for homecoming travelers are within the same province," wrote a Kompas Litbang researcher in their report on Friday, March 14, 2025.
When asked about their reasons, 31.6% of respondents chose to use private vehicles for their homecoming trip because they felt it would be more comfortable than public transportation.
Furthermore, 25.2% of respondents chose to travel home by car because it was cheaper than using public transportation.
"This phenomenon can be more clearly illustrated by the fact that 30.1% of respondents who traveled home by car transported at least five people," wrote the Kompas Litbang researcher.
Another 21.8% of respondents chose private vehicles for their homecoming trip because they had more flexibility in planning their itinerary and schedule, unlike public transportation which has fixed departure times.
In addition, 12.5% of respondents felt their journey was safer using a private vehicle, and 8.9% felt more freedom to stop at tourist attractions.
This survey involved 532 respondents from 38 randomly selected provinces, proportionate to the population of each province.
Data collection was conducted from March 4-7, 2025, through telephone interviews. The survey's margin of error is approximately 4.25% with a 95% confidence level, under conditions of simple random sampling.
