Indonesia's Motorcycle Sales and Exports Slump in December 2024

According to a report by the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), domestic motorcycle sales in Indonesia reached 403,480 units in December 2024. This is the lowest record for the entire year.

Volume plummeted 21.34% month-to-month (mtm) compared to November 2024, which reached 512,942 units.

In line with this, motorcycle exports from Indonesia also corrected by 5.65% (mtm) to 55,537 units.

Scooter-type motorcycles still dominated both domestic sales and exports.

Scooter sales contributed 90.39% to total domestic motorcycle sales and 50.06% to total exports.

Sport-type motorcycle sales contributed 4.21% domestically and 24.45% to exports.

Underbone motorcycles contributed 5.40% domestically and 25.48% to exports.

Cumulatively, domestic motorcycle sales from January to December 2024 reached 6.33 million units, up 1.54% compared to the same period last year (cumulative-to-cumulative/ctc).

Similarly, motorcycle exports in 2024 increased slightly by 0.43% (ctc) to 572,506 units.

In addition, AISI's Head of Commercial, Sigit Kumala, mentioned that AISI may revise its motorcycle sales target for 2025, due to the implementation of the excise tax policy which took effect on January 5, 2025.

According to him, this new policy makes motorcycles more expensive and is feared to reduce public purchasing power.

"With this excise policy, we will first observe the impact. We will wait for 1-2 months," said Sigit in his statement, as reported by Bloomberg Technoz on Thursday (9/1/2025).
