The Jakarta Feminist report reveals 180 cases of femicide in Indonesia in 2024. These cases involved 187 victims and 197 perpetrators.
The National Commission on Violence Against Women (Komnas Perempuan) defines femicide as the murder of women, directly or indirectly, because of their gender. Femicide is driven by superiority, dominance, hegemony, aggression, and misogyny towards women.
Jakarta Feminist compiled this femicide data by searching online news channels throughout 2023 using keywords such as "murder of women/transwomen/transgender women/female waria/transgender women/waria murdered/women/waria killed".
A total of 145 femicide cases involving female victims, 6 cases involving transwomen, 12 cases of murdered girls, and 17 cases of criminal acts against women were documented.
"The highest number of femicide cases are still on Java Island, at 42%," said Nur Khofifah, Project Officer of Jakarta Feminist, in her report presentation on the Komnas Perempuan YouTube channel on Tuesday (December 3, 2024).
East Java recorded the highest number of femicide cases with 24, followed by West Java and Central Java with 22 cases each.
Meanwhile, three provinces reported no femicide cases: Gorontalo, South Papua, and Southeast Sulawesi.
"There were no appropriate keywords to reach out to femicide case data in these regions," said Khofifah.
Jakarta Feminist's data shows that 13% of femicide victims had a family relationship with the perpetrator. This includes children, mothers, siblings, and other family members.
"Women who had an intimate relationship with the perpetrator were the most numerous victims of femicide, at 37%, and they were mostly wives, girlfriends, mistresses, secret lovers, exes, and dates," said Khofifah.
