Based on data from the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF), the number of cars produced in the ASEAN region reached 4.38 million units throughout 2022. This figure represents a 24% year-on-year (YoY) increase from the previous year's 3.58 million units.
Thailand was the largest car producer in Southeast Asia in 2022, with 1.88 million units, or 41.09% of the total car production of ASEAN member countries last year.
Car production in Thailand increased by 12% YoY from 1.68 million units the previous year.
Indonesia ranked second with a total car production of 1.47 million units in 2022. This represents a 31% YoY increase from 1.12 million units in 2021.
Malaysia ranked third with a total car production of 702,275 units. Vietnam and the Philippines followed in fourth and fifth place, with car production of 232,410 units and 92,223 units respectively.
Myanmar was the lowest car producer in Southeast Asia, with only 3,175 units produced throughout 2022.
Meanwhile, car sales in Southeast Asia reached 3.42 million units in 2022. This figure grew by 23% from the previous year's 2.79 million units.
Indonesia led car sales in the ASEAN region with 1.04 million units, followed by Thailand with 849,388 units, Malaysia with 720,658 units, and Vietnam with 404,635 units.
