Motorcycles are a popular mode of transportation in several Southeast Asian countries.
According to data from the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF), motorcycle sales in the region reached 6,524,244 units in the first half of 2023. This is a 15.53% increase compared to the same period the previous year (year-on-year/yoy), which was 5,646,750 units.
The AAF data analyzes the sales performance of two-wheeled vehicles in six countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
By country, Indonesia dominated motorcycle sales in Southeast Asia in the first half of this year, with 3,201,930 units. This accounts for 49.07% of total motorcycle sales in the region.
Motorcycle sales in Indonesia from January to June 2023 also increased by 42.52% from January to June 2022 (yoy).
Below Indonesia is Vietnam, with motorcycle sales of 1,223,614 units, or a 13.15% year-on-year (yoy) increase. Motorcycle sales in Vietnam in the first half of this year accounted for 18.75% of total sales in Southeast Asia.
Next, the largest motorcycle sales were recorded in Thailand and the Philippines. Motorcycle sales in Thailand totaled 993,981 units, while the Philippines recorded 798,366 units.
Malaysia is in fifth place with motorcycle sales of 300,392 units in the first half of 2023.
Meanwhile, Singapore is in sixth and last place on the AAF list, with 5,961 units. This is equivalent to 0.09% of total sales in Southeast Asia in the first half of 2023.
Motorcycle production in Southeast Asia reached 6,941,084 million units in the first half of this year. This figure is up 21.47% from the previous year (yoy).
Indonesia also leads motorcycle production in the ASEAN region, with 3,470,652 million units. This is followed by Vietnam with 1,341,806 units, Thailand with 1,127,604 units, the Philippines with 694,946 units, and Malaysia with 306,076 units.
