The Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI) reported that Indonesia's monthly motorcycle exports increased in February 2023. However, domestic motorcycle sales decreased.
Domestic motorcycle sales in February 2023 totaled 575,502 units, a 6.48% month-on-month (mom) decrease compared to January 2023's 615,416 units. Compared to the same period last year, February 2023 domestic motorcycle sales increased by 56.33% year-on-year (yoy). In February 2022, Indonesian motorcycle sales amounted to 368,131 units.
Conversely, Indonesia's monthly motorcycle exports increased by 16.19% (mom), rising from 39,269 units in January 2023 to 45,627 units in February 2023. However, compared to February 2022's 59,542 units, exports decreased by 23.36% year-on-year (yoy).
Scooter motorcycles contributed the most to both domestic sales and exports. Scooters accounted for 90.42% of total domestic sales and 57.47% of total exports in February 2023.
Underbone motorcycles contributed 4.95% to total domestic sales and 15.34% to total exports. Sport motorcycles contributed 4.63% to domestic sales and 27.18% to exports.
2023 Motorcycle Sales Target
AISI targets Indonesian motorcycle sales to reach 5.6 million units by the end of 2023. The association is optimistic about this target, given that motorcycle sales in the previous year met and even exceeded expectations.
"This year's motorcycle sales target is in the range of 5.4 million to 5.6 million units. One of the driving factors is the increased public mobility following the lifting of PPKM (Community Activity Restrictions)," said Sigit Kumala, Head of AISI's Commercial Division, as quoted by Kontan.co.id on Monday (March 6, 2023).
In addition to the lifting of PPKM, Sigit stated that another factor driving motorcycle sales this year is the improving domestic economy. "Commodity prices remain high, although slightly lower than last year, they are still higher than in 2019," said Sigit.
In 2022, AISI recorded Indonesian motorcycle sales of 5.2 million units, exceeding AISI's previous target of 5.1 million to 5.4 million units.
