Car exhibitions always attract considerable consumer attention in Indonesia. Besides buying new cars, the public can also view the latest models and advancements in automotive technology. From August 10th to 20th, 2017, the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) took place at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE), BSD Serpong. This exhibition is expected to boost car sales in the domestic market, which is currently experiencing stagnation.
For information, Indonesia maintained its lead in automotive sales in Southeast Asia during the first half of 2017. Data from the ASEAN Federation Automotive shows that Indonesian car sales from January to June of that year reached 533,570 units, a slight increase of only 0.3 percent compared to the same period the previous year. Domestic sales were also the largest compared to other ASEAN countries, accounting for 33 percent of the total 1.61 million units.
Car sales in all ASEAN countries increased except for Brunei Darussalam, which experienced a nearly 5 percent decrease. Meanwhile, car sales in Thailand and the Philippines continued to grow at double-digit rates, increasing by 25.4 percent to 410,000 units and 17.1 percent to 284,000 units, respectively.
