To reduce dependence on fossil fuels, global automotive companies are racing to create increasingly environmentally friendly transportation. One approach is using electric power. Currently, there are two known variants of electric vehicles: hybrid vehicles (using a combination of gasoline and batteries) and fully battery-electric vehicles.
In 2016, the number of electric vehicles reached 2 million units worldwide for the first time. According to data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), this comprised 1.21 million hybrid vehicles and 805,000 battery-electric vehicles. China dominated the number of electric vehicles, with 648,770 units (32.2 percent) of the total, followed by the United States with 563,710 units (28 percent).
Throughout 2016, there was an increase of 753,170 electric vehicles, consisting of 466,430 hybrid vehicles and 286,750 battery-electric vehicles. This represents a 37.7 percent increase from the previous year, which only reached 547,120 units.
