Based on data from the clean technology website *CleanTechnica*, BYD Automotive became the world's best-selling electric vehicle (EV) producer in the first half of 2023.
The Chinese manufacturer recorded sales of 1.19 million electric vehicles between January and June 2023, the highest compared to other manufacturers.
Below BYD is Tesla, with electric vehicle sales totaling 888,870 units during the first half of the year.
“BYD is ahead of Tesla, and the two together control more than a third of the global plugin vehicle market,” *CleanTechnica* stated on its website.
Far behind these two manufacturers is BMW in third place. The German automaker sold 220,790 electric vehicles in the first half of 2023.
Next, the Chinese manufacturer GAC Aion recorded electric vehicle sales of 212,090 units. Followed by Volkswagen, which sold 209,850 electric vehicles.
Although BYD leads the list of the world's best-selling electric vehicle manufacturers, Tesla surpasses the Chinese company in terms of vehicle type.
*CleanTechnica* data shows that the Tesla Model Y was the best-selling electric vehicle type between January and June 2023, reaching 579,550 units.
It is followed by the Tesla Model 3 with 279,320 units, BYD Song with 259,720 units, BYD Qin Plus with 204,250 units, and BYD Dolphin with 158,510 units.
