The 2017 Christmas and 2018 New Year celebrations, coinciding with school holidays, resulted in increased demand for transportation, including air travel. The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) predicted a 5.2 percent increase in air passengers during this year-end holiday season, reaching 7.24 million passengers compared to the previous year.
Based on aircraft movements, Soekarno-Hatta Airport (Soeta) is the busiest in Indonesia. Kemenhub data recorded 413,781 aircraft movements at Soeta Cengkareng throughout 2016. This comprised 327,000 domestic flights and 86,549 international flights.
The second busiest airport is Juanda Surabaya, with 148,232 aircraft movements, consisting of 135,963 domestic flights and 12,269 international flights. Third is Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali, with a total of 138,274 aircraft movements, comprising 80,285 domestic flights and 57,989 international flights.
