Car sales in the ASEAN region have shown an increase after being impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. Indonesia recorded the highest car sales in ASEAN towards the end of 2021.
According to data from the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AFF), Indonesia sold 703,089 units from January to October 2021. This figure represents a 67% increase compared to the same period in the previous year, which saw 421,064 units sold.
Car sales in Indonesia have been increasing since March 2021. This increase is partly driven by the government's policy of providing discounts on luxury goods sales tax (PPnBM) until December 2021.
Thailand holds the second position with 596,393 units sold during the same period. Car sales in Thailand decreased by 2.1% compared to the same period in the previous year, which reached 608,880 units.
Malaysia is in third place with 382,379 units sold from January to October 2021. Car sales in Malaysia decreased by 4.8% compared to the same period last year, which saw 401,714 units sold.
Vietnam is in fourth place with 218,734 units sold. Following in order are the Philippines with 214,186 units, Singapore with 51,069 units, and Myanmar with 7,874 units.
In total, ASEAN car sales reached 2,173,724 units from January to October 2021. This is a 15.7% increase from the same period last year, which saw 1,878,042 units sold.
In terms of production, Indonesia still lags behind Thailand. Thailand recorded the highest car production in ASEAN with 1,365,984 units, while Indonesia is in second place with 892,352 units.
