The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) notes that the number of interprovincial buses in Indonesia has been declining since 2016-2020. The average growth in the number of interprovincial buses over the past five years has decreased by 11.38%.
Specifically, the number of interprovincial buses was 22,742 units in 2016. This number decreased to 16,238 units in 2017.
The following year, the number of interprovincial buses increased slightly to 16,353 units. However, the number decreased significantly again to 12,367 units in 2019.
In 2020, the number of interprovincial buses increased by 834 units to 13,201 units. Central Java has the highest number of interprovincial buses, with 3,066 units.
This is followed by DKI Jakarta with 2,438 interprovincial buses, and West Java with 2,353 units.
Meanwhile, several provinces have no interprovincial bus services: North Kalimantan, Southeast Sulawesi, East Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, Papua, North Maluku, Riau Islands, West Papua, and West Sulawesi.
Furthermore, the number of bus/transportation companies in Indonesia has been increasing since 2016-2020, reaching 4,621 companies last year.
These bus/transportation companies cover six services: intercity interprovincial buses (AKAP), interprovincial shuttle buses (AJAP), tourist buses, rental transportation, heavy equipment transportation, and hazardous and toxic material (B3) transportation.
