Continuum Research conducted an analysis of public conversations regarding the discourse on sea sand exports on social media. The analysis utilized a big data approach from Twitter.

Continuum collected data from Twitter conversations during the period of May 30 - June 12, 2023, excluding discussions from mass media and paid influencers (buzzers). They then analyzed the exposure, sentiment, and topics of conversation.

In total, Continuum found 40,702 conversations from 28,561 Twitter accounts related to the topic of sea sand exports.

The results showed that President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, were the figures most highlighted by Twitter users regarding this policy.

“When asked who are the figures most responsible for the policy of reselling sea sand, President Jokowi and Coordinating Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan are the figures most highlighted and held responsible for this,” said Continuum Data Analyst Maisie Sagita in a press release on Wednesday (5/7/2023).

Specifically, there were 9,900 tweets related to Jokowi as the figure responsible for the sea sand export discourse. This was followed by 3,800 tweets related to Luhut on the same issue.

Meanwhile, the number of netizens highlighting the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), Sakti Wahyu, was the lowest compared to the two figures above. Only 800 tweets regarding Sakti Wahyu and this policy were recorded.

The research also showed that the majority of netizens (57.2%) considered the policy to be environmentally damaging. Furthermore, 24.9% of conversations assessed that the sea sand export policy would only benefit a small number of parties, primarily businessmen or oligarchs.
