According to the WTO-IMF *COVID-19 Vaccine Trade Tracker*, by the end of 2021, approximately 11.5 billion doses of vaccines had been produced worldwide.
However, currently, only 61.6% of the global population has received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine (*Our World Data*, as of February 11, 2022).
In Indonesia itself, only about 48% of the population has received a complete dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, with an additional 19% having received one dose (as of February 11, 2022).
Therefore, the world still needs billions more doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to ensure full global protection. This vaccine supply is also crucial to help countries recover from the crisis caused by the pandemic.
The following is a breakdown of countries that are both producers and exporters of COVID-19 vaccines:
1. China
Based on data from the WTO-IMF *COVID-19 Vaccine Trade Tracker*, by December 31, 2021, China had produced 5.009 billion doses of vaccine. However, only 1.578 billion doses, or about 31.5% of its total production, were exported.
2. European Union
The European Union is the second largest producer of COVID-19 vaccines after China, with production reaching 2.677 billion doses by the end of last year. However, the EU exported more vaccines than China, reaching 1.676 billion doses, or 62.6% of its total production.
3. India
India is the third largest vaccine producer in the world, with production reaching 1.712 billion doses. However, the percentage of vaccine exports from India is very small, at 105 million doses or 6.1% of its total production.
4. United States
The United States produced 1.117 billion doses of vaccine by the end of 2021. 571 million doses, or 51.5% of total production, were exported.
5. Russia
As of December 31, 2021, Russia had produced 253 million doses of vaccine, with 92 million doses exported, or 36.5% of total production.
6. South Korea
South Korea produced 189 million doses of vaccine by the end of 2021. 165 million doses, or 87% of total production, were exported.
7. South Africa
By the end of 2021, South Africa had produced 82.3 million doses of vaccine. 71 million doses, or 86% of total production, were exported.
Largest COVID-19 Vaccine Exporter: European Union
Based on the data above, by December 31, 2021, the largest producer of COVID-19 vaccines was China, with a total production of 5.009 billion doses.
However, the largest exporter of COVID-19 vaccines was the European Union, with total exports reaching 1.676 billion doses, or 62.6% of its total production.
In addition, there are three other countries that are classified as major vaccine producers globally: Brazil with a total production of 116 million doses, Mexico with 103 million doses, and Thailand with 82 million doses.
However, vaccines produced by Brazil, Mexico, and Thailand were not exported and were entirely used to meet domestic needs.
