The Indonesian Ministry of Finance will impose most favored nation (MFN) tariffs—the general import tariffs applicable among World Trade Organization (WTO) members—on eight categories of imported goods starting October 17, 2023.

Outside these eight categories, imported goods valued above US$3 but not exceeding US$1,500 will be subject to a single import tariff of 7.5%.

Fadjar Donny Tjahjadi, Director of Customs Technical Affairs at the Directorate General of Customs and Excise (DJBC) of the Ministry of Finance, stated that this measure aims to protect MSMEs and domestic industry growth.

"This is also a follow-up to the President's directive to reduce imports of consumer goods," said Fadjar Donny in a press release on Thursday (12/10/2023).

"We hope that, through the issuance of PMK Number 96 of 2023, improved import services for shipped goods will be realized from the import side, without neglecting aspects of supervision and accuracy of data reporting on imported shipped goods. Meanwhile, from the export side, this regulation is expected to improve customs administration for exported shipped goods," he continued.
