Ninety-five percent of Indonesian exports were transported by sea in 2022.

Based on a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia's exports reached US$291.90 billion in 2022. This figure increased by 26.03% compared to the previous year, which stood at US$231.60 billion.

When broken down by mode of transportation, exports from Indonesia are dominated by sea freight.

"As much as 95.4% of the total value of Indonesian exports in 2022 was shipped using sea transport," wrote the BPS in its report.

Recorded sea transport exports reached US$278.86 billion, a 27.20% increase from the previous year.

Next, air transport contributed 3.39% to the export of goods, amounting to US$9.90 billion. This figure grew by 4.49% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, exports via pipeline contributed 1.04% of total national exports, reaching US$3.04 billion, or a 7.12% increase compared to the previous year.

Land transport contributed only 0.02%, or US$61.7 million. Despite this small share, this mode of transport saw the highest growth at 122.25% from the previous year.

Finally, the export of goods via post had the smallest contribution, at 0.01%, with exports valued at US$21.5 million. This figure increased by 50.98% from the previous year.
