Top 5 Export Destinations for Indonesian Coal, January-November 2021

The global increase in coal prices caused a significant surge in the value of Indonesian coal exports last year, a key commodity for the country.

China was the largest market for Indonesian coal last year. Coal exports to the People's Republic of China reached 31.11% of the total national coal export volume.

Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) reported that the volume of Indonesian coal exports grew by only 2.93% to 318.73 billion tons from January to November 2021, compared to the same period in the previous year (309.66 billion tons). However, the export value soared by 80.06% to US$ 23.78 billion in the January-November 2021 period, compared to US$ 13.22 billion in the same period of 2020.

Coal exports to China increased by 84.96% to 99.15 billion tons in the January-November 2021 period, compared to 53.61 billion tons in the same period of the previous year. Meanwhile, the value jumped by 255.02% to US$ 8.12 billion, compared to US$ 2.29 billion previously.

India was the next largest destination for Indonesian coal exports. The export volume reached 66.68 billion tons in the January-November 2021 period, a decrease of 25% compared to the same period of the previous year (89.11 billion tons). However, the value increased by 22.38% to US$ 3.76 billion.

Other major export destinations for Indonesian coal include Japan (US$ 2.22 billion in January-November 2021), Malaysia (US$ 2.1 billion), and the Philippines (US$ 1.23 billion).
