What were Indonesia's top non-oil and gas export commodities in 2021?

The surge in prices of several Indonesian flagship commodities, such as coal and palm oil, caused a sharp increase in non-oil and gas exports last year.

Indonesia's Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded non-oil and gas exports reaching US$120.45 billion, equivalent to Rp1.72 quadrillion (at an exchange rate of Rp14,269 per US$), throughout 2021. This figure shows a 58.33% growth compared to the previous year, which only reached US$76.07 billion.

Mineral fuel non-oil and gas exports (Harmonized System/HS 27) recorded the highest value, reaching US$32.84 billion in 2021. This figure jumped almost twofold, or 90.3%, compared to the previous year's US$17.26 billion. This contributed 14.98% to the total Indonesian non-oil and gas exports.

The next largest non-oil and gas export commodities were animal and vegetable fats and oils (HS 15), reaching US$32.82 billion. This was followed by iron and steel (HS 72) at US$20.95 billion, machinery and electrical equipment (HS 85) at US$11.79 billion, and chemical products (HS 38) at US$6.91 billion.

Other significant commodities included metal ores, slag, and ash (HS 26) with exports valued at US$6.35 billion. This was followed by precious metals and jewelry/gems at US$5.42 billion, nickel (HS 75) at US$1.28 billion, cocoa and its preparations (HS 18) at US$1.21 billion, and fertilizers (HS 31) at US$863.7 million.

These ten flagship commodities accounted for 54.93% of the total national non-oil and gas export value last year. The remaining non-oil and gas exports amounted to US$98.82 billion.
