As of September 2016, there were 166 7-Eleven outlets in Indonesia, spread across several regions. This represents a decrease of 21 outlets compared to the 187 outlets at the end of 2015. Furthermore, on March 1, 2017, PT Modern International Tbk (the 7-Eleven licensee in Indonesia) announced the closure of 30 outlets since the beginning of the year.
Intense competition in the minimarket business forced Modern International to close dozens of 7-Eleven convenience stores since 2016. In addition, the ban on selling alcoholic beverages, especially beer, in minimarkets significantly impacted 7-Eleven's revenue. High visitor numbers did not guarantee high sales at these stores, which are popular hangouts for teenagers.
According to Seven & i Holdings data, the number of 7-Eleven outlets reached 60,815 in November 2016, an increase compared to the 57,476 outlets in the same period the previous year. The largest number of outlets is located in Japan, with over 19,000. Thailand has approximately 9,000 outlets, and South Korea has around 8,405.
