The United States supplied 81% of Indonesia's soybean imports from January to August 2022.

The United States (US) is the main supplier of Indonesia's soybean imports. Data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that soybean imports from the US reached 1.37 million tons worth US$955.3 million during the January-August 2022 period.

The volume of soybean imports from the "Uncle Sam's Country" accounts for 81.72% of the total national soybean imports of 1.68 million tons during January-August this year.

Indonesia's next largest soybean imports are from Canada, with a volume of 242,000 tons worth US$153.87 million in the first eight months of this year. Then from Brazil and Argentina with volumes of 41,700 tons and 19,360 tons respectively.

Soybean imports from Malaysia amounted to 2,740 tons worth US$1.5 million, and from other countries totaled 895 tons worth US$611,740.

For information, one of the raw materials for traditional Indonesian food, namely tofu and tempeh, comes from soybeans. To meet domestic needs, the government imports large quantities of soybeans every year to prevent shortages of raw materials for tempeh and tofu, as domestic production is still insufficient.
