A survey conducted by JakPat found that 52% of respondents in Indonesia already own pets, while another 26% are interested in having one.
The main reason for keeping pets is to reduce stress and improve mood, as stated by 63% of respondents.
Other reasons include having companionship at home (62%), learning responsibility (42%), enjoying animals’ appearance (31%), and improving home security (22%).
The survey also found that some respondents wanted to become more physically active (18%) and join animal lover communities (10%).
In terms of pet types, the majority of respondents, or 75%, chose cats as pets. They were followed by fish (30%), birds (21%), dogs (11%), and rabbits (8%).
The JakPat survey involved 1,254 respondents, which was later narrowed down to 647 respondents who own pets. Overall, the respondents consisted of 50% men and 50% women.
Respondents were located in Java outside Greater Jakarta (41%), Greater Jakarta (35%), and outside Java (24%). By generation, 51% of respondents were millennials (30–45 years old), 37% were Gen Z (15–29 years old), and 12% were Gen X (46–50 years old).
The survey was conducted online through the JakPat application on March 9–10, 2026, with a margin of error below 5%.
