Indonesia's high soybean consumption, exceeding domestic production, necessitates significant imports. The largest demand is for the production of tofu, tempeh, and soy sauce.
The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded soybean imports of 2.68 million tons in 2024, a 17.67% increase from the previous year's 2.27 million tons. This is the highest volume in the last five years.
While the value of soybean imports last year reached US$1.4 billion, it decreased by 4.89% from the previous year's US$1.47 billion. The decline is attributed to lower international soybean prices.
The majority of Indonesia's soybean imports in 2024 originated from the United States (US), reaching 2.38 million tons. This was followed by Canada (261,530 tons), Argentina (22,900 tons), Malaysia (7,340 tons), and Bolivia (5,270 tons).
According to the Food Consumption Bulletin from the Ministry of Agriculture's Data and Agricultural Information System Center, soybean procurement totaled 2,668,908 tons, while demand reached 2,662,097 tons in 2024. The details are as follows:
